What Happens When The Glen has a Snow Day?

  • Snow Days, Delays, and Emergency Closures at The Glen Montessori School

How The Glen Communicates Weather and Emergency School Closures

Consistency and routine are important in Montessori education, and we never choose to change a child’s schedule lightly. However, severe winter weather can sometimes make normal routines impossible.

    Weather-Related Delays and School Closures

Decisions regarding weather-related school delays or closures are generally made by 6:00 AM on the day of a weather event.

When winter weather impacts travel safety, The Glen Montessori School will either:

     – Delay the start of school until 10:00 AM, or

     – Close school for the day

Because Montessori education is hands-on and classroom-based, The Glen does not offer remote or flexible instruction during occasional snow days.

How Parents Are Notified About Snow Days

The Glen Montessori School uses ONE CALL NOW, a rapid communication system that allows us to quickly notify families, faculty, and staff about:

     – Snow day delays

     – School closures

     – Emergency situations

     – Mid-day dismissals due to emergency school closures

Each family and staff member may enroll up to five phone numbers in the system.

Please contact Ms. Luisa if you would like to add additional phone numbers.

To ensure you receive notifications promptly, add the ONE CALL NOW number to your Favorites and enable Emergency Bypass on your phone.

    Additional Snow Day Announcement Sources

Information about school delays and school cancellations will also be posted through:

    WTAE

    KDKA

    WPXI

    The Glen Montessori School website

School social media channels – Facebook and Instagram

Television stations will list the school as: “The Glen Montessori School.”  Be sure to check under both T and G, as different reporting systems may categorize the name differently.

Teachers will also email classroom families directly whenever possible.

    Other Emergency School Closures

The same ONE CALL NOW procedures are used for other emergency situations, including (but not limited to):

    • Power outages
    • Plumbing issues
    • Building-related emergencies

In these situations, parents will receive a notification with pickup instructions. Families are generally expected to pick up their children within one hour of receiving the message.

    Safety Is Our Top Priority

Student and staff safety always guides decisions regarding snow day closures and delays.

When evaluating weather conditions, we consider:

     – Road conditions

     – Snow accumulation

     – Temperature

     – Wind chill

     – Weather forecasts

     – Travel safety across our region

If roads are unsafe or impassable, The Glen Montessori School may delay opening or close for the day.

    Transportation Considerations

Many Glen students travel by bus from their local school districts, while others are driven by family members.

Unlike public school districts that serve a single geographic area, The Glen Montessori School serves students from many different communities. Weather conditions may vary significantly between areas.

A snowstorm near the school may not affect Pine Township or Emsworth. Likewise, severe weather in Moon Township or Crafton may not impact the area around The Glen.

For this reason, parents should always use their best judgment regarding travel safety and communicate with their child’s teacher when necessary.

    School Bus Transportation Guidelines

If your home school district delays or cancels school or transportation, please follow your district’s guidance regarding your child’s transportation to and from The Glen Montessori School.
