Middle School Micro Economy – Why?

The Purpose and Value Behind Glen Middle School Market!
A cornerstone of the Montessori Middle School curriculum is the Micro Economy—a practical, hands-on way for students in 7th and 8th grades to explore production, exchange, and the social life of work. True to Maria Montessori’s vision, it provides an authentic environment for adolescents to experience responsibility, collaboration, and entrepreneurship.
Early in the school year, Glen students work together to decide which products they will offer in their shop. They analyze what has sold well in the past, consider the skills available among their peers, and plan for sustainability by teaching one another how to make each product. New product ideas are researched with attention to production costs and potential profit, blending creativity with real-world economics.
Led by 8th-year students in managerial roles, the group manages inventory, maintains financial spreadsheets, produces high-quality goods, and interacts directly with customers and suppliers. This year, The Glen’s Middle School Micro Economy established its business name, Middle School Market, opened a checking account at a local bank, and set up shop at the Ross Township Farmers Market. Depending on production efforts each week, students have been selling items such as handmade jewelry, knitted and crocheted bunnies, upcycled book trees, watercolor greeting cards, hand-poured scented candles, fire starters, dishcloths, headbands, hats, mittens, and apple butter.
Beyond the skills of budgeting and business management, the Micro Economy fosters confidence, initiative, and community connection. Students enjoy engaging with customers and learning from fellow vendors—experiences that deepen their understanding of commerce, build meaningful relationships, and inspire new ideas for future ventures.
Visit the Ross Township Farmers Market on Wednesday, October 15 and 29 to see these students in action! More dates to come in 2026.
