A Glimpse of The Glen
As our classrooms get to know each other this fall, we have summarized the home questionnaires that each family fills out as part of their initial enrollment materials. We wanted to share a little bit of who we are at The Glen and how we think of ourselves.
During the COVID pandemic, The Glen’s enrollment limit is 205 students from about 160 families (usually, we are around 250 students from nearly 190 families; this enrollment reduction ensures physical distancing in the classrooms). The Glen employs more than 40 faculty, and about 50% currently have—or did when their children were the right age!—enrolled their children at The Glen.
Families come from all over the region – and have roots from all over the world! Families live in the following school districts: North Allegheny, Avonworth, North Hills, Hampton, Quaker Valley, Northgate, Pittsburgh Public, Shaler, Seneca Valley, Mars, Pine Richland, and Carlynton.
The racial/ethnic diversity of Glen families closely reflects the diversity of the Pittsburgh region: about 63% of families self-report their identity to be caucasian (including Latino families) with 37% non-white (primarily made up of Asian and Black/African American, and mixed-race).
Glen families speak more than 20 languages at home, including English, American Sign Language, Arabic, Cantonese, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Lithuanian, Malayalam, Mandarin, Marathi, Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Spanish, Tamil, Telugu, and Turkish.
Parents also report a variety of professions, including (in no particular order): pastors, authors, copywriters, business owners (a lot!), HVAC experts, therapists/licensed counselors, data analysts, consultants (a variety of areas/expertise), researchers, pharmacy technicians, computer programmers, software engineers, physicians (pediatricians, emergency medicine, pathologists), nurses (pediatrics, ICU) nurse practitioners, business executives, chemical engineers, attorneys, teachers/educators, multiple music teachers, professors (a lot!), network technicians, CEO (several), home parents (several), engineers (chemical, electrical, energy), lacrosse coach, financial advisors, government officials, architects, artist, graphic designer, horticulturist, landscape designer, business analyst, plumber, graduate student, executive producer, design consultant, US Armed Forces (Air Force, Army, and Navy), speech pathologist, registered dietician, chemist, realtor, security consultant, sales, floral designer, dentist, scientist, paralegal, parole agent, and many more.
More exciting tidbits—most families at The Glen (43%) have two children, with 28% having one child, and 23% have three children. Four percent of families have four children or more – and we have several families with new Glen students on the way!
More fun family facts about Glen families involve pets – or lack thereof! More than 50% of our families do not report having a pet in the home. Two percent have chickens, and the remaining families claim dogs and cats (or a combination of dogs and cats!) in their family make-up. We think there must be a Gekko, fish, or guinea pig in there somewhere – but no one has owned up to it!
This is a snapshot of The Glen – just a quick peek into our families.
