The Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service was created to honor Dr. King’s legacy by encouraging Americans to turn the holiday into a “day on” rather than a day off. The idea was championed by former Pennsylvania Senator Harris Wofford and Georgia Congressman John Lewis, who co-authored the King Holiday and Service Act. President Bill Clinton signed the law in 1994, making service a central part of the holiday.
