Music Education at The Glen
The Music curriculum at The Glen is designed to bring joy to your child’s learning journey. Our two main goals are to foster the natural enjoyment of music and to equip students with the tools to understand and fluently speak the international language of music.
Starting with the Birth to Three program, students embark on a gradual journey of musical discovery. They sing songs, familiarize themselves with various simple-pitched and non-pitched percussion instruments, and connect their voices and bodies with movement and music.
As students grow into Children’s House, they will learn to sing, dance, and play more advanced instruments such as xylophones and boomwhackers in the classroom. This will develop their ability to play rhythms and melodies with music.
In Lower Elementary, students begin to read music on the staff, continuing using instruments introduced in Children’s House. This is also when children begin to combine multiple parts in harmony in the same piece of music, demonstrating their more sophisticated skills. The optional Bell Choir Club opportunity is also available in our after-school program.
When students get to Upper Elementary, they get to improve and practice their musical knowledge. All students learn the recorder over their 3-year tenure in Upper Elementary, giving them time to fully master the instrument while reinforcing musical concepts learned years prior.
In 4th grade, we introduce the opportunity for students to play a concert band instrument. This year, we have students playing drums, trombone, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, and flute, to name a few. Interested students practice and perform together in ensembles, providing a practical life experience that can continue into middle and high school. We encourage you to be part of this journey and support your child’s musical growth.
